PACKERY CHANNEL PROJECT IS UNDERWAY!
The  dredging of Packery Channel, which has long been a dream of developers and local officials who want to turn Padre Island into a major resort,  recieved final approval,  in September of 2003 work began.

Packery Channel is a silt-filled pass on Padre Island between the Laguna Madre and the Gulf of Mexico. Developers and city leaders long have said that if it were dredged to allow quick access for pleasure boats to the Gulf, the island would become a magnet for development and tourism.

The construction of Packary channel will restore beaches, provide additional storm protection and reopen a natural pass seperating Padre and Mustang Islands. Future phases will enhance recreational areas. Bids for he construction of the channel and other phase improvements were recieved on July 9, 2003. Luhr Brothers/King Fisher, a joint venture group, submitted the low bid and was awarded the contract.

The dredging project is estimated to cost $31.8 million, which would be paid through federal funding, and a local match of $10.5 million. The local match would include the $1.25 million land office grant, plus the sale of bonds by the city to private investors. (from Dredging News Online)

The construction time schedule isto start the work in August of 2003 and have the project completed by September of 2005.
